Q: The thought of choosing lighting options is daunting, how should I prepare when shopping for lighting?

There is a lot of choice in lighting out there, it can be easy to be overwhelmed by the choices. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Determine your style and taste. Take a look around your home. What décor makes you the most comfortable? Whether your style runs traditional, modern or transitional, there is a style of lighting that will suit your taste. Look through magazines and find pictures of rooms that appeal to you or watch a few design shows for even more inspiration.

Know what the area is used for and know how large your space is. You will need different lighting for doing homework or food preparation than you will need for dining or entertaining. Some areas will serve multiple purposes, so you may need different types of lighting in a single location. Take a look at the size of the room. If you have a 9′ ceiling in your entry, a large, elaborate chandelier won’t work for you. Likewise, if you have a large kitchen island, a small dainty pendant won’t be adequate.

Make sure you have a plan to map out your electrical receptacles, switches and outlets. This is especially important for new construction or large remodeling jobs. The less re-wiring you have to do, the better.
